Saint Joan of the Stockyards featuring Laibach

Ljubljana

Saint Joan of the Stockyards, a play written by Bertolt Brecht following the Wall Street crash of 1929, is being put on stage at Cankarjev Dom in a new international production featuring original music composed and performed live on stage by the band Laibach.

Directed by Davide Sacco and Agata Tomšič of the ErosAntEros duo, the production had its international premiere at the Arena del Sole in Bologna, Italy, on 18 April.

It is a co-production of Emilia Romagna Teatro ERT and the Ljubljana Mladinsko Theatre in cooperation with Cankarjev Dom, TNL - Luxembourg National Theatre, Teatro Stabile from Bolzano and ErosAntEros - POLIS Teatro Festival.

The major themes of Brecht's play are economy, capital, financial speculation and exploitation of workers, which remain topical today.

Mladinsko Theatre notes that the centres of production have since shifted, but the exploitation of living beings and resources has not stopped, generating further crises such as global warming, wars, pandemics and energy crises.

The production includes video clips, while the actors perform in different languages, which is to show that in the age of globalisation "we can achieve the revolution that will ensure that future generations continue living on this planet only through a joint effort".

After the Slovenian premiere on 10 November, the show will be rerun the next day. The performance is in Italian, Slovenian, German and English with surtitles.
