Winter Festival

The 8th Winter Festival, organised by the Ljubljana Festival, will open at Cankarjev Dom on 20 February with The War Requiem, a monumental orchestral and coral piece composed by Benjamin Britten.

The requiem will be performed by the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, conducted by Charles Dutoit, joined by the Kaunas State Choir from Lithuania and the famous Wiener Sängerknaben, founded in the thirteenth century.

Russian soprano Nadezhda Pavlova, English tenor Ian Bostridge and German baritone Matthias Goerne will perform as soloists.

The requiem will be rerun the next day, on 21 February.

The festival will see several other internationally acclaimed musicians, wrapping up with a concert by Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov at Cankarjev Dom on 2 March.

Slovenia's best known harpist Mojca Zlobko Vajgl will perform a concert with French harpist Marion Ravot at the Slovenian Philharmonic on 25 February.

A concert of Bach's chorales and instrumentals at the Philharmonic on 26 February will feature accordionist Marko Hatlak, mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink and bass-baritone Marcos Fink, flautist Eva-Nina Kozmus, pianist Aleksandra Pavlovič, violinist Jelena Pejić and double bass player Stevan Jovanović, among others.

The Zagreb Soloists will perform at the Slovenian Philharmonic on 27 February,

The festival will be accompanied by an international competition of bass quintets and quartets.
