Biennial of Illustration

Dec 12 2024 - Mar 9 2025
Ljubljana

The 15th Slovenian Biennial of Illustration in Cankarjev Dom features works by 69 artists, picked among 144 applications.

A variety of illustrators of all generations are presented. The oldest is Marjanca Jemec Božič, who contributed a piece she did last year when she was 95 years old.

Various techniques are represented, from painting and printmaking to digital illustration and animation.

Slovenia's illustration scene with all of its offshoots, from architectural drawing and scenographic sketches to video art, is one of the best in Europe, says Zoran Poznič, the head of the Association of Slovenian Artists' Organisations, one of the organisers of the event.

Every year the exhibition pays special attention to the annual recipient of the biennial's award for lifetime achievement. This year the award went posthumously to illustrator, painter, graphic artist and designer Tomaž Kržišnik, who died last year.

Born in 1943, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he graduated with a master's degree in book illustration in 1968. He has been praised for the innovative aspects of his drawings, puppets, set designs, posters, installations, and glass and ceramic products.
