Dodecalogy 1972-1983, a theatre omnibus

Jan 10 2025 - Dec 15 2025
Nova Gorica, Ljubljana, Krušče

A major project of the 2025 European Capital of Culture in Nova Gorica Gorizia, Dodecalogy 1972-1983 is a series of twelve interconnected theatre productions dedicated to lives of people in Central Europe in the 20th century.

Directed by acclaimed Slovenian director Tomi Janežič, the theatre omnibus involves more than 100 participating artists, including 80 actors from different ensembles from Slovenia and abroad.

It is a "transgenerational documentary fiction" about Nova Gorica and its connections to other cities, including Ljubljana, Timisoara in Romania, Ivano-Frankivsk in Ukraine, and Novi Sad in Serbia.

Produced by theatre companies from those cities, the twelve performances tell stories of ordinary people, delving into the themes of borders, socio-political and ideological transformations, war, and the enduring threads of journeys and migrations.

Each play is dedicated to a single year between 1972 and 1983, but due to the experiences and stories told by the characters, the omnibus encompasses the entire 20th century.

Audiences can see each on their own or as a part of a whole. All twelve will be staged in Slovenia, one each month of the year, nine of them in Nova Gorica, two in Ljubljana and one in Krušče in the Cerknica municipality with the Krušče Creative Centre being one of the producers.

The first show, 1972, opened at a travel trailer at the SNG Nova Gorica theatre, on 10 January. It is staged for a single audience member at a time (more here).

Meanwhile, the production 1976 will be staged at the Nova Gorica stadium in May. For the list of all twelve shows, click here.

Some of the productions from the omnibus have already been staged broad. One of them, 1978, has been nominated for top awards in several categories in Romania, named a major event of 2024.

While 1978 was staged in Timisoara, 1981 was staged in Novi Sad last year, winning excellent reviews, according to director Tomi Janežič.
