Srebrenica genocide commemoration events

Jan 22 2025 - Jul 9 2025
Ljubljana, Novo Mesto

A series of events, including exhibitions, discussions and a ceremony will mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.

The programme, organised by the Ljubljana Muslim Cultural Centre in cooperation with several Slovenian institutions, aims to commemorate, raise awareness and educate about the genocide, in which more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslims were killed.

It will open with an exhibition at Cankarjev Dom (22 Jan - 16 Feb) under the title Breaking News Unable to Break the Wall of Conscience.

Curated by journalist and editor Ali Žerdin, the exhibition features a selection of newspaper headlines and clippings on the events from the Slovenian, Bosnian and world press, to show how the world remained powerless in the face of the impending catastrophe.

After the opening, Žerdin will host a discussion with Fikret Alić, a survivor of two camps, researcher and historian Mujo Begić, and Nada Kronja-Stanič, a witness to the press coverage of the crimes in Prijedor. On 27 January he will host a talk with international law professor Vasilka Sancin.

The Museum of Contemporary History will open another exhibition in April featuring personal stories and belongings of 15 Srebrenica genocide survivors who live in Slovenia.

Opening in June, an exhibition in the Dolenjska Museum in Novo Mesto will showcase Srebrenica-themed works by Bosnian artists.

It will wrap up with a ceremony at the Muslim Cultural Centre in Ljubljana on 9 July featuring President Nataša Pirc Musar as the keynote speaker.
