Snow sculpting competition

Jan 31 2025 - Feb 2 2025
Črna na Koroškem

Teams from around the world are expected at the northern town of Črna na Koroškem on the first weekend of February to build sculptures from ice and snow at the 33rd Castles of King Matjaž event.

The competition is inspired by the medieval legend of King Matjaž, a story that depicts the legendary king as a just defender of his people.

The event will feature groups of snow castle artists from Mongolia, Andorra, Italy and Spain to showcase their talents, though their sculptures will not be part of the competition.

The event will take off on Friday with a night-time slalom that will see skiers navigate their way down a torch-lit piste.

On Saturday the teams will work on their castles and sculptures, which will be illuminated in the evening. The jury and the audience will each choose their favourite castle.

Sunday will see workshops, puppet shows and a treasure hunt for children, who will also be able to try out a mini ski jump slope, a hot air balloon and an ice slide.

Visitors will also be able to enjoy several concerts by local performers and a fire show.

The event, whose origins date back to 1993, has been held in Črna since 2019.
