Regional theatre festival
Jan 29 2025 - Feb 4 2025 Ljubljana
City theatres from six countries of the former Yugoslavia will stage their productions in Ljubljana as part of the annual regional travelling theatre festival Ruta.
Hosted by the Ljubljana City Theatre (MGL), the festival will open on 29 January with its production of Casimir and Caroline, a play by Austro-Hungarian author Ödön von Horvath, directed by Nina Rajić.
The festival is the product of collaboration agreed in 2019 by six theatre companies from the former Yugoslavia; the MGL, the Belgrade Drama Theatre, the Skopje Drama Theatre, the Sarajevo Chamber Theatre 55, the Brijuni-based Ulysses Theatre and the Podgorica City Theatre. Since the end of last year, the latter has been replaced by the Tivat Cultural Centre.
Each year, the festival is held in each of the participating theatres.
Running until 4 February, this year the festival will also see the Ivan Vazov National Theatre from Sofia, Bulgaria, perform Medea by Euripides directed by Declan Donnellan from the UK.
The Tivat theatre will stage Eugene Ionesco's The Bald Soprano, the Sarajevo theatre Boris Lalić's Peaceful Bosnia, the Skopje theatre will stage Elfride Jelinek's Princess Plays and the Belgrade theatre Jaroslav Hašek's Švejk, while Kazalište Ulysses will perform Girls by director Tjaša Črnigoj.
