The Threepenny Opera

Mar 20 2025 - Mar 29 2025
Ljubljana

The Threepenny Opera, the 1928 "play with music" by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, will open at the Slovenian National Theatre (SNG) Opera and Ballet in a co-production with the National Drama Theatre.

The first such collaboration between the two eminent ensembles, the production has been directed by Mateja Koležnik and conducted by Marko Letonja.

The play was first staged in Slovenia in 1937, but this is the first time to feature theatre actors and opera singers, as originally conceived.

The Threepenny Opera is an adaptation of the early 18th-century Beggar's Opera by John Gay, in which the author promoted the Enlightenment idea of equality of all people.

Offering a critique of the capitalist world, The Threepenny Opera focuses on Macheath, played by Jurij Zrnec, an amoral antihero who leads a criminal gang, committing robbery, arson, rape and murder.

Featuring Janez Škof as Jonathan Jeremiah Peachum, Barbara Cerar as Celia Peachum and Mina Švajger as Macheath's wife Polly Peachum, the cast includes a total of 22 actors and singers.

The play will premiere on 20 March with reruns every day until 29 March except for Sunday, 23 March. For details and tickets, click here or here.
