Gorizia, Nova Gorica and other locations

A retrospective of Slovenian and Italian films and newsreels about the life on the border between socialism and capitalism will be held in towns along the Slovenian-Italian border as part of the official programme of the European Capital of Culture.

The retrospective East/West - Border Through Film and History will see 40 live action, documentary and animated films from both countries.

The retrospective will open on 10 April at Kinemax in Gorizia with the Slovenian-Italian co-production Zoran, My Nephew the Idiot (2013), followed by the feature film Stories from the Chestnut Woods and the documentary essay Timeless River.

Talks with the directors will be held after every screening and visitors will be taken on a tour of the film heritage of Gorizia. There will also be a round table on the importance of cultural identity for the future of Europe and a screening of a selection of archival and contemporary short films.

Organised by Kinoatelje, a Gorizia-based hub for intercultural and cross-border projects in film and audiovisual media, the retrospective will also visit Nova Gorica, Tolmin, Deskle, Komen, San Pietro al Natisone, Trieste, Gemona del Friuli and Ljubljana.

It will also travel to Timisoara in April, and Belgrade and Pristihna in May. Some of the films will be screened in June in Vienna and in Zittau on the border between Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic.
