Fruits Dreamed of by Farmers in Winter Time

Slovenj Gradec

Photographs by multi-award winning photographer and filmmaker Gregor Božič from the Nova Gorica are on display at the Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts in Slovenj Gradec in the north of the country along with landscapes from Slovenian museums and private collections that testify to human connection with nature.

The exhibition Fruits Dreamed of by Farmers in Winter Time has been mounted in cooperation with the European Capital of Culture in Nova Gorica and Gorizia, the French Institute in Slovenia and the French museum MUba Eugene Leroy.

It is an adaptation of the show that was on display at the French museum in Tourcoing from September 2024 to February this year, curated by Benedicte Duvernay from MUba Eugene Leroy.

Focusing on Božič's photographs, the exhibition illustrates the interplay of natural and cultural landscapes and the conflict between nature and human rationalisation of the environment, while expressing a renewed desire to restore balance.

Božič's photographs draw attention to the disappearance of indigenous fruit varieties and associated cultural heritage, which he has documented in the few parts of Europe where traditional production methods still exist.

Božič, 41, has established himself as a director and cinematographer. He directed the award-winning 2019 film Stories from the Chestnut Woods, and was director of photography of the Oscar-nominated and Palme d'Or winning film The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent (2024).
