Exhibition on Laibach's version of Guernica

Apr 23 2025 - May 9 2025
Ljubljana

Famous for their avant-garde concepts and social commentary, the industrial rock band Laibach and their version of Picasso's Guernica are the centrepieces of an exhibition that opens on 23 April in Ljubljana's Cukrarna gallery.

Titled Unternehmen Barbarossa-Ausstellung! Laibach Kunst, the exhibition is based on a project the band did in cooperation with the organisation A/POLITICAL.

They intertwined motifs of Nikolaj Pirnat's graphic designs inspired by the WWII resistance movement and the story of an Afghan family from Kabul to shape their own version of Guernica. As part of the project the family recreated the version in the form of a traditional Afghan rug, which is now displayed in Cukrarna.

The exhibition coincides with the 42nd anniversary of Laibach's iconic concert that led to the band being banned for several years. The 1983 performance plays an integral part in the exhibition's origin story and will be restaged on 9 May, the final day of the exhibition.
