Mušič exhibition at Štanjel Castle

Apr 25 2025 - Sept 5 2025
Štanjel

Works by internationally acclaimed painter Zoran Mušič (1909-2005) will be on display at the Lojze Spacal Gallery at Štanjel Castle in the first of three major exhibitions as part of the programme of the 2025 European Capital of Culture Nova Gorica - Gorizia.

Titled Bodies of Landscapes, the exhibition focuses on the artist's landscapes in dialogue with Lojze Spacal (1907-2000), another painter from the region of Kras.

It features works from seven series - horses, Dalmatian motifs, the Siena and Umbria landscapes and stone landscapes. The last room will indicate his most valuable period starting in 1970, when he created the first works from the We Are Not the Last series in which he depicted his experience of the Dachau concentration camp.

Some of Mušič's pre-war works have also been included. He created those during his time in Maribor and Ljubljana, before he moved to Venice following his return from Dachau.

Curator Nelida Nemec says the title of the exhibition was inspired by a comparison between corpses and landscapes made by art historian Nace Šumi, who was a Dachau survivor himself.

Mušič, who was significantly marked by the Dachau experience, also often said that when he looked at landscapes, he thought "of corpses, landscapes of corpses".

Another Mušič exhibition will open on 14 May at Dobrovo Castle, followed by yet another one in Gorizia's Attems-Petzenstein Palace running from 25 May to 31 October.
