Jurij Kalan's humorous wooden sculptures
Sept 7 2023 - Nov 12 2023 Ljubljana
Fractions, a retrospective exhibition on painter Jurij Kalan at the Ljubljana City Art Gallery, showcases his "shepherd's woodcarvings", along with the artist's most prominent paintings and sketches depicting motives of everyday life.
The largest exhibition of Kalan's creations to date features works created between 1991 and 2023, including paintings of various formats, sketches, photographs and graphic prints, as well as painted stone and wooden heads and totems.
The artist depicts his family members, friends and pets in a realistic style but spices things up in a humorous and comic manner by warping his sculptures and using a bird eye's view, the exhibition's curator Sarival Sosič said.
Kalan is one of the most prominent Slovenian painters who has had a great impact on the trends of the modern Slovenian art. He is one of the founding members of the informal artist group Divji V Srcu (Wild At Heart).
