National Eurovision final returns
Public broadcaster RTV Slovenija has decided to bring back the traditional national competition to select the country's Eurovision entrant after last year's selection was mired in controversy and was found to have involved the risk of corruption.
A dozen performers or bands will be selected from applications, due by 25 November, by a broadcaster jury to perform in the EMA 2025, the national final, on 1 February, according to rules released by RTV Slovenija on 28 October.
After all twelve candidates have performed their songs, they will be evaluated by five separate five-member juries featuring music industry professionals, TV professionals, radio industry professionals, Slovenian Eurovision Fan Club members, and the influencer community.
These juries will select the two top songs, and only then will televoting determine which one will compete in Basel.
The selection process marks a U-turn from last year, when Raiven was picked as the Slovenian entrant without any public input.
RTV Slovenija had made a pre-selection procedure and the shortlisted songs were supposed to compete for the Eurovision ticket, but because Raiven received more than half of all jury points, the additional competition was abruptly cancelled.
The decision provoked an outcry among performers. It led to the resignation of TV Slovenija entertainment editor Vanja Vardjan, and it triggered a probe by the Commission for the Prevention of Corruption.
While the anti-graft watchdog did not confirm suspicion that Raiven was favoured, it said there had been a risk of corruption.
It issued recommendations to improve the transparency of the selection process, including by making the selection rules clear well in advance and naming the members of the juries.
